Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis has written to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asking him to ensure transparency in reporting COVID-19 related deaths.

In his letter, Fadnavis accused the Maharashtra government of hiding the number of COVID-19 deaths in Mumbai and urged for the immediate intervention of the Chief Minister to resolve the same.

“I request you to present the statistics to the people of the state in a very transparent manner. As you say this war or battle should be against Corona, not against statistics,” the letter read.

While referring to an article published in the Indian Express, Fadnavis said that the actual number of deaths in Mumbai were still being hidden. He further added that there was a need to bring clear information about the situation in Mumbai before the public.

Fadnavis also wrote about the deaths which are being caused due to inadequate oxygen supply to COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of KEM hospital. He said that 10 patients died due to low oxygen which highlights serious defects in the healthcare system.

“Earlier in May, 12 people died at the Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari due to an oxygen (tank) malfunction,” Fadnavis wrote while urging the Chief Minister to eliminate the number of fatalities due to “human errors”.

The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should be directed to make the numbers factual and public.

In the last 18 days, the total number of patients in Maharashtra has increased by 43.86 per cent while in Mumbai, the number of patients has increased by 36.88 per cent. Fadnavis, in his letter, further wrote that Mumbai’s mortality rate has reached 5.27 per cent.
