A farmer hailing from Raigad district was arrested by police personnel deployed outside the permanent residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He was trying to enter ‘Matoshree’ along with his wife and young daughter.
Farming is the only source of income for Mahendra Deshmukh. He took a loan from the bank earlier but the heavy rainfall damaged the produce. Not only this, but the unseasonal rainfall also pushed him under debt.
Seeing no other option repay his loan, Mahendra came to Mumbai with his wife and daughter wanting to meet the Chief Minister to demand a loan waiver. However, the police arrested him as he tried to sneak into ‘Matoshree’.
It is learnt that the debt-ridden farmer tried to enter the Chief Minister’s resident earlier in January as well. Mahendra was not allowed inside ‘Matoshree’ even then and was given assurance for a loan waiver. However, his interest rate on the loan kept increasing.
Mahendra has been trying to meet CM Uddhav Thackeray since June. This time, however, he sat on a ‘dharna’ along with his family outside ‘Matoshree’ and refused to leave. As a result, the police arrested him.
