On Wednesday, political worker Ganesh Dilip Pawar from Ahmednagar who is associated with Prakash Ambedkar’s Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh tried committing suicide outside Mantralaya.

Pawar came with kerosene and a matchbox to immolate himself. However, before he could pour kerosene and immolate himself, the police personnel from Marine Drive police station who was posted on duty outside Mantralaya stopped him. Pawar had come to Mantralaya demanding the arrest of right-wing leader Sambhaji Bhide, who has been accused of instigating the Bhima-Koregaon violence in January 2018.

In the last few months, there had been a spate of suicides outside Mantralaya. One which garnered attention was the suicide of 84-year-old farmer Dharma Patil from Dhule district, who died during treatment. He was protesting against the inadequate compensation for his land.

Following this, a murder convict jumped off the fifth floor and died while he was on his way to the hospital. Meanwhile, in order to prevent suicides, in the month of February, the state government installed safety nets at the building’s second floor. Along with this, security and screening have also been tightened.
